Examining the Life Growing on (and inside) Apalachicola’s Oysters

July 23 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Oyster reefs are widely known to support a plethora of animal life, including crabs and fish. A closer look though, can reveal communities of attached animals including barnacles, sponges, clams, anemones, snails, and more. Various parasites can also be found inside the oysters themselves. While extensive efforts have been given to restoring the oysters of Apalachicola Bay, how these associated communities might affect the oysters, or how the communities might change across Apalachicola, is less known. Lauren will share some of her findings examining the associated invertebrate communities and parasites within the bay, and the potential impact they might have on the condition of the oysters.
