Lessons Learned and Pearls of Wisdom from the Bay: Oyster Restoration in Apalachicola

January 22 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Emily Fuqua will kick off the Sci-Cafe series this year with oyster restoration projects she has been involved in around the Apalachicola Bay area. By integrating oyster biology and restorative aquaculture approaches into restoration, these projects aim to support Florida’s oyster populations and their ecosystems, and they incorporate a large array of techniques from larval culture to drone mapping. Emily will highlight promising additional and alternative approaches to traditional oyster restoration for Florida and the Apalachicola Bay area.

Emily recently earned her PhD at Florida State University in December 2025. Her background includes finfish and shellfish restoration using traditional and restorative aquaculture techniques for fisheries management and ecosystem restoration. She has worked with culturally and economically important species, such as cobia, redfish, and oysters in South Carolina and Florida. Her research focuses on conservation and restoration of important coastal species and ecosystems.
