SUMMARY:Oyster Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the role oysters play in the health of Apalachicola Bay. Discover what makes the bay so ideal for growing oysters\, what gives our oysters their distinct flavor\, and how oyster bars benefit the ecosystem. We will also look at possible causes of the oysters collapse and what is being done to restore them to Apalachicola Bay. Participants will get the chance examine these creatures under our high-powered microscope\, and learn more about the animals that live in our bay and along the tidal flats. \nRegistration is free but required. To register go to: https://OysterClassJan2026.eventbrite.com \n

SUMMARY:Understanding Red Tide: Effects on Coastal Communities and Strategies for Mitigation
DESCRIPTION:Red tide events pose significant environmental\, economic\, and public health challenges for Florida’s coastal communities. Join us for a discussion on red tide\, its impacts\, and current strategies to reduce its effects on coastal waters. \nOur featured speaker\, Kevin Claridge\, Associate Vice President for Sponsored Research and Coastal Policy Programs at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium\, will present on January 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve. \nKevin serves as the Mote Administrator for the newly established Florida Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative\, recently approved by the Florida Legislature and Governor. His responsibilities also include oversight of Mote’s Office of Research Grants\, Contracts\, and Sponsored Programs\, as well as the Mote Marine Policy Institute. Prior to joining Mote\, Kevin served as Director of the Office of Resilience and Coastal Protection at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). \nThe Florida Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative is a partnership between Mote Marine Laboratory and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The initiative establishes an independent\, coordinated effort among public and private research entities to develop prevention\, control\, and mitigation technologies aimed at reducing the impacts of red tide on the environment\, economy\, and quality of life in Florida. \nIf you miss the talk on Friday\, Kevin Claridge will also be presenting at the Friends of St Joseph Bay Preserves annual meeting at the Centennial Building in Port St. Joe at 10:00 am Saturday\, January 17th.

SUMMARY:Lessons Learned and Pearls of Wisdom from the Bay: Oyster Restoration in Apalachicola
DESCRIPTION:Emily Fuqua will kick off the Sci-Cafe series this year with oyster restoration projects she has been involved in around the Apalachicola Bay area. By integrating oyster biology and restorative aquaculture approaches into restoration\, these projects aim to support Florida’s oyster populations and their ecosystems\, and they incorporate a large array of techniques from larval culture to drone mapping. Emily will highlight promising additional and alternative approaches to traditional oyster restoration for Florida and the Apalachicola Bay area. \nEmily recently earned her PhD at Florida State University in December 2025. Her background includes finfish and shellfish restoration using traditional and restorative aquaculture techniques for fisheries management and ecosystem restoration. She has worked with culturally and economically important species\, such as cobia\, redfish\, and oysters in South Carolina and Florida. Her research focuses on conservation and restoration of important coastal species and ecosystems. To register go to https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/4207101376533861470 After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
