SUMMARY:Fishy Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:Friends\, Romans\, Countrymen\, Lend Me Your Beach Debris! Fishy Fashions and the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve is pleased to announce a special installation in our nature center. Fishy Fashions are marvelously inventive costumes made from flotsam and jetsam and assorted beach debris. This exhibition will begin with a kick-off event\, “Fishy Fashion Show\,” on Tuesday September 30th at 5:30PM. This fun and educational art and science collaboration will feature original artistic costumes created by local artist Joan Matey\, sculptures and fashion accessories created by Franklin County School art class students\, as well as educational materials to help increase awareness of the causes and amount of marine debris affecting our oceans. The exhibit will be viewable in the Apalachicola National Research Reserve’s Nature Center on September 30th and through the end of December 2025.

SUMMARY:Bay Friendly Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:Yard design and maintenance can have a big effect on adjacent water bodies. Participants in this workshop will learn about resources to help them transform their yard into a luscious bay conscious landscape. The class will feature resources on landscaping in Florida’s unique soil conditions\, where to buy plants and seeds\, innovative Green Infrastructure techniques such as rain gardens\, green roofs\, and bio-swales. Come find out how to be good to the bay and reduce the time you spend on maintenance! \nFor information call or email Anita Grove at (850) 670-7708 Anita.Grove@FloridaDEP.gov

SUMMARY:Apalachicola River & Floodplain Exploration
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola River has been called “the Lifeblood of the Bay.” Come learn about the ecology\, culture\, and history of the Apalachicola River and floodplain\, and the impact interstate relationships play in the control of the river. After the in-class portion\, we will embark on a journey up the river aboard the ANERR research vessel Henry Lee to get an up-close look at some of the floodplain ecosystems and distributaries of the river.\nThis class is free\, however reservations are required. \nThis class seeks to help residents of Franklin and neighboring counties understand the value of this connected ecosystem. Participants will learn about the ecology\, culture\, and history of the Apalachicola River and floodplain\, as well as the Bay to come to appreciate the impact of these systems. After the in-class portion\, participants will embark on a journey up the river aboard the Reserve’s research vessel to get an up-close look at some of the floodplain ecosystems and distributaries of the river. \nPlease Note:\nThis trip will require moderate walking and climbing in and out of a boat.\nThis class is intended for adult education purposes\, so we kindly ask that people registering be 16 years or older.\nIf you have taken this class before\, please withhold from making reservations allowing others a chance to learn. \nTickets for the class are free but must be claimed in advance by registering on Eventbrite https://ApalachicolaRiverFall2025.eventbrite.com If you have any further questions\, email Anita Grove Anita.Grove@FloridaDep.gov.

SUMMARY:Flight of the Monarch Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve on Tuesday\, November 18\, from 1:00-5:30 pm for a free educational event about monarch butterflies. Each fall monarch butterflies pass through our area during their 2\,ooo mile long migration to their overwintering grounds in Central Mexico. Over the past 25 years\, Reserve staff along with volunteers have routinely captured\, tagged and released monarchs as part of Monarch Watch’s Citizen Science program to understand the dynamics of the migration through a mark and recapture program. We invite you to join us to learn and celebrate this beautiful creature. \nActivities will include:\nMonarch Migration presentation followed by Tagging\ndemonstration and release of tagged monarchs.\n4 Sessions begin at 1:15\, 2:15\, 3:15 & 4:15 (limit of 60/session) \n“Flight of the Butterflies” Movie (56 mins)\n3 Showings begin at 1:30\, 3:00 & 4:30 (limit of 30/showing) \nDisplays on the monarch life cycle\, planting native\nmilkweed and microscopic detection of OE parasite. \nHelp plant native milkweed. \nChildren’s activities include: button making\, “Pin the Tag\nthe Monarch” game\, butterfly face painting and create a\nmonarch ink block print to take home\, tattoos. \n*Note: Nature Center gift shop will remain open until 5:30pm.*

SUMMARY:Oyster Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the role oysters play in the health of Apalachicola Bay. Discover what makes the bay so ideal for growing oysters\, what gives our oysters their distinct flavor\, and how oyster bars benefit the ecosystem. We will also look at possible causes of the oysters collapse and what is being done to restore them to Apalachicola Bay. Participants will get the chance examine these creatures under our high-powered microscope\, and learn more about the animals that live in our bay and along the tidal flats. \nRegistration is free but required. SUMMARY:Quantifying River Flow Metrics for the Apalachicola River
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Steve Leitman will provide an overview of a new project looking to develop and quantify scientifically defensible river flow metrics that can be used as evaluation criteria to test potential modifications to federal reservoir operations in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) River system. This project aims to improve ecological resilience in the Apalachicola River floodplain and estuary while minimizing impacts to upstream stakeholders. Dr. Leitman has studied and worked on projects in the Apalachicola system for over 40 years. To register please go to https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/7386225996313976413. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information on how to join the webinar.
