DESCRIPTION:Coastal erosion is a natural process. Currents\, wave action\, wind\, and storms constantly reshape shorelines. While seawalls might seem like permanent solutions\, they often increase erosion on neighboring properties and can fail during intense storms. Living shorelines use plants and natural materials to protect shorelines\, support the surrounding intertidal environment\, improve water quality\, and create habitats for both aquatic and terrestrial species. Understanding living shorelines and coastal-friendly landscaping practices can save homeowners frustration and money. Learn about plants that thrive in coastal environments and help stabilize your property\, plus we will visit a nearby living shoreline.

SUMMARY:Oyster Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the role oysters play in the health of Apalachicola Bay. Discover what makes the bay so ideal for growing oysters\, what gives our oysters their distinct flavor\, and how oyster bars benefit the ecosystem. We will also look at possible causes of the oysters collapse and what is being done to restore them to Apalachicola Bay. Participants will get the chance examine these creatures under our high-powered microscope\, and learn more about the animals that live in our bay and along the tidal flats. \nRegistration is free but required.

SUMMARY:Protecting Endangered Sea Turtles
DESCRIPTION:Donna Knutson will provide an overview of the 2024 sea turtle nesting season on St. George Island. She began her work in sea turtle conservation as a volunteer from 2019 to 2023 before joining the Apalachicola Reserve staff in 2024 as Volunteer Coordinator and leader of the St. George Island Turtle Patrol.\nDuring her presentation\, Donna will share key statistics from the 2024 season\, including the number of nests laid\, hatchlings\, false crawls\, and disorientations\, along with trends and comparisons to previous years. She will highlight major challenges\, particularly disorientations and their causes\, and offer practical ways beachgoers can support sea turtle conservation. SUMMARY:Apalachicola River & Floodplain Exploration
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola River has been called “the Lifeblood of the Bay.” Come learn about the ecology\, culture\, and history of the Apalachicola River and floodplain\, and the impact interstate relationships play in the control of the river. After the in-class portion\, we will embark on a journey up the river aboard the ANERR research vessel Henry Lee to get an up-close look at some of the floodplain ecosystems and distributaries of the river.\nThis class is free\, however reservations are required. \nThe purpose of this class is to help residents of Franklin and neighboring counties understand the value of this connected ecosystem. Participants will learn about the ecology\, culture\, and history of the Apalachicola River and floodplain\, as well as the Bay to come to appreciate the impact of these systems. After the in-class portion\, participants will embark on a journey up the river aboard the Reserve’s research vessel to get an up-close look at some of the floodplain ecosystems and distributaries of the river. \nPlease Note:\n*This trip will require moderate walking and climbing in and out of a boat.* \n*This class is intended for adult education purposes\, so we kindly ask that people registering be 16 years or older. \n*If you have taken this class before\, please withhold from making reservations allowing others a chance to learn.* \nTickets for the class are free but must be claimed in advance by registering on eventbrite.
