SUMMARY:Bay Friendly Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:Yard design and maintenance can have a big effect on adjacent water bodies. Participants in this workshop will learn about resources to help them transform their yard into a luscious bay conscious landscape. The class will feature resources on landscaping in Florida’s unique soil conditions\, where to buy plants and seeds\, innovative Green Infrastructure techniques such as rain gardens\, green roofs\, and bio-swales. Come find out how to be good to the bay and reduce the time you spend on maintenance! \nPlease register for the class in advance:\nhttps://AnerrLandscaping2024.eventbrite.com \nFor information call or email Anita Grove at (850) 670-7708 Anita.Grove@FloridaDEP.gov

SUMMARY:Apalachicola River & Floodplain Exploration
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola River has been called “the Lifeblood of the Bay.” Come learn about the ecology\, culture\, and history of the Apalachicola River and floodplain\, and the impact interstate relationships play in the control of the river. After the in-class portion\, we will embark on a journey up the river aboard the ANERR research vessel Henry Lee to get an up-close look at some of the floodplain ecosystems and distributaries of the river.\nThis class is free\, however reservations are required.\nhttps://AnerrRiverClass2024.eventbrite.com \nThe purpose of this class is to help residents of Franklin and neighboring counties understand the value of this connected ecosystem. Participants will learn about the ecology\, culture\, and history of the Apalachicola River and floodplain\, as well as the Bay to come to appreciate the impact of these systems. After the in-class portion\, participants will embark on a journey up the river aboard the Reserve’s research vessel to get an up-close look at some of the floodplain ecosystems and distributaries of the river. \nPlease Note:\n*This trip will require moderate walking and climbing in and out of a boat.* \n*This class is intended for adult education purposes\, so we kindly ask that people registering be 16 years or older. \n*If you have taken this class before\, please withhold from making reservations allowing others a chance to learn.* \nTickets for the class are free but must be claimed in advance by registering on eventbrite. If you have any further questions\, please do not hesitate to get in touch with either Alicia Bruno (850)670-7710 Alicia.Bruno@FloridaDep.gov.

SUMMARY:Oyster Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the role oysters play in the health of Apalachicola Bay. Discover what makes the bay so ideal for growing oysters\, what gives our oysters their distinct flavor\, and how oyster bars benefit the ecosystem. We will also look at what possibly made the oysters collapse and what is being done to restore them to Apalachicola Bay. After spending some time in the classroom\, participants will get the chance look at its these creatures under a microscope. This class is full of opportunities to learn more about the animals that live in our bay and along the tidal flats. \nRegistration is free but required.\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/oyster-ecology-tickets-984178593667?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Apalachicola Estuary Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the estuary we depend on\, Apalachicola Bay and its connected ecosystem. Learn about the habitats and inhabitants of the estuary and how the river and bay are intricately linked. We will see these habitats up close aboard the Reserve’s research vessel the Tideline. SUMMARY:Living Shorelines Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Coastal erosion is a natural process. Currents\, wave action\, wind\, and storms constantly reshape shorelines. While seawalls might seem like permanent solutions\, they often increase erosion on neighboring properties and can fail during intense storms. Living shorelines use plants and natural materials to protect shorelines\, support the surrounding intertidal environment\, improve water quality\, and create habitats for both aquatic and terrestrial species. Understanding living shorelines and coastal-friendly landscaping practices can save homeowners frustration and money. Learn about plants that thrive in coastal environments and help stabilize your property\, plus we will visit a nearby living shoreline. SUMMARY:Sci-Cafe: Using models to discover hydrodynamic and ecological responses to climate variability in Apalachicola Bay and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Steven Morey is the Distinguished Research Scientist for the NOAA Center for Coastal and Marine Ecosystems and a Professor in the Florida A&M University School of the Environment will discuss his research using models to discover hydrodynamic and ecological responses to climate variability in Apalachicola Bay and beyond. Dr. Morey earned his Ph.D. in oceanography from Florida State University and\, prior to joining the faculty at FAMU\, was a Senior Research Scientist at the FSU Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies. He is a physical oceanographer with expertise in hydrodynamic modeling\, coastal processes\, and impacts of circulation and environmental variability on marine ecosystems. Dr. Morey’s current research includes modeling of Apalachicola Bay hydrodynamic and ecological response to freshwater flow variability\, assessing and improving models for Gulf of Mexico circulation\, and applications of satellite wind measurements to coastal oceanography. Go to https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/774040134177601886 to register. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information on how to join the webinar. \n
