SUMMARY:Bay Friendly Landscaping Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Yard design and maintenance can have a big effect on adjacent water bodies. Participants in this workshop will learn about resources to help them transform their inefficient yard into a luscious bay conscious landscape. The class will also feature information on innovative Green Infrastructure techniques such as rain gardens\, green roofs\, and bio-swales. Come find out how to be good to the bay and reduce the time you spend on maintenance! Please register for the class in advance at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bay-friendly-landscaping-tickets-253339263557. For more information contact: Anita Grove at (850) 670-7708 or by email Anita.Grove@dep.state.fl.us

SUMMARY:Living Shorelines to Prevent Erosion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation and discussion on the use of living shorelines as an alternative to hardened shorelines. Hurricane Michael left proof that living shorelines can protect property from erosion and survive intense storms as well as or even better than a seawall or hardened shorelines. Living shorelines also make it easier to access the water for humans and wildlife. Anita Grove with the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve will share examples of area successful living shorelines\, describe the benefits and physical factors to consider for living shorelines such as wave energy\, prevailing wind and wave direction\, vegetation\, and soil type. For more information\, please contact Anita Grove at 850-670-7708 or Anita.Grove@FloridaDEP.gov for more information.

SUMMARY:Reserve Wednesday: Artificial Reefs in Franklin County
DESCRIPTION:Florida has one of the most active artificial reef programs along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Artificial reefs can enhance recreational and diving opportunities\, increase reef fish habitat\, help protect shorelines\, and provide stable substrate for a number of marine and estuarine species. Here in Franklin County\, the Apalachicola Artificial Reef Association (AARA) is the organization that oversees the expansion of artificial reef structures. Grayson Shepard from the AARA will present an overview of what artificial reefs are and provide the latest updates on the reefs in Franklin County.

SUMMARY:Oyster Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the role oysters play in the health of Apalachicola Bay. Discover what makes the bay so ideal for growing oysters\, what gives our oysters their distinct flavor\, and how oyster bars benefit the ecosystem. We will also look at what possibly made the oysters collapse and what is being done to restore them to Apalachicola Bay. After spending some time in the classroom\, participants will get the chance look at its these creatures under a microscope. This class is full of opportunities to learn more about the animals that live in our bay and along the tidal flats. Registration is free\, but registering is required https://www.eventbrite.com/e/oyster-ecology-tickets-253366695607 Questions call Anita Grove at (850) 670-7708 or email Anita.Grove@FloridaDep.gov.

SUMMARY:Apalachicola Bay Estuary Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the estuary we depend on\, Apalachicola Bay and its connected ecosystem. Learn about the habits and creatures that make up our estuary and how the river and bay are intricately linked. We will see these habitats up close aboard the Reserve’s research vessel the Henry Lee. SUMMARY:Sci Cafe: Chapman’s Orchid - Pollination-based Speciation in the Fringed-Orchid Complex
DESCRIPTION:Botanist Dr. Jim Folsom talk about Chapman’s orchid. Jim’s life-long interest in these orchids began when he was a graduate student at Vanderbilt University where he studied the pollination biology of the orchids. Now\, after further study of tropical orchids and a 36-year career as Director of California’s Huntington Botanical Gardens (California)\, he has returned to the Panhandle to resume his studies as part of an active retirement. Jim and his wife Debra moved to St George Island recently renewing his decades-long interest in the Panhandle flora. He remains dedicated to public outreach that advances understanding\, appreciation\, and conservation of plant biodiversity. Join us for a virtual event! https://event.gotowebinar.com/event/88c73823-8790-43c2-9c9c-c52367cb1ba6 After registering\, you’ll get a confirmation email about joining the event.
