DESCRIPTION:Coastal erosion is a natural process. Wind\, currents\, and wave action constantly reshape shorelines. While seawalls might seem like a permanent solution\, they often increase erosion on neighboring properties and can fail during intense storms. Living shorelines use plants and natural materials to stabilize shorelines\, support the surrounding intertidal environment\, and create habitats for both aquatic and terrestrial species. Understanding these coastal-friendly landscaping practices can help stabilize your property and stem erosion.

DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola River has been called “the Lifeblood of the Bay.” Come learn about the ecology\, culture\, and history of the Apalachicola River and floodplain\, and the impact interstate relationships play in the control of the river. After the in-class portion\, we will embark on a journey up the river aboard the ANERR research vessel Henry Lee to get an up-close look at some of the floodplain ecosystems and distributaries of the river.\nThis class is free\, however reservations are required. \nThis class seeks to help residents of Franklin and neighboring counties understand the value of this connected ecosystem. Participants will learn about the ecology\, culture\, and history of the Apalachicola River and floodplain\, as well as the Bay to come to appreciate the impact of these systems. SUMMARY:Estuaries Day
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve will celebrate Estuaries Day on Friday\, May 1st\, from 1:30-5:30 pm E.T. in Eastpoint. The event is free and will include fun educational activities for kids and adults\, and estuary-themed games. Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult. \nNew activities will be debuting this year such as ink block art printing\, Be Bay Aware\, the junior water quality lab\, and living shoreline demonstrations. Old favorites will also be returning\, including the cast net game\, the wacky waterfront race\, aquatic animal touch tanks\, live oyster microscope viewing\, glass grinding and sand art\, Be-A-Bear\, and more! \nAttendees can also tour ANERR’s 5\,400 square-foot Nature Center with its three large aquariums filled with local estuarine and marine life\, an 80-foot-long mural depicting the area ecosystems\, and a hands-on Bay Discovery Room.  \nThe first visitors will receive a free T-shirt (for ages three and up). SUMMARY:Teachers on the Estuary 2026
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the beauty of Apalachicola Bay and Dog Island Sound by boat and by land.  This class offers opportunities to learn how to use nature journaling as an interdisciplinary tool for teaching students of all ages and abilities. Nature journaling is an inquiry-based method that uses numbers\, words\, and pictures to explore students’ own questions and ignite their curiosity. Teachers will use it as an access point to learn about the estuarine ecosystem\, and its versatility will be demonstrated on the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve boat\, the FSU Coastal Marine Lab boat\, as well as in the marsh and on the shoreline. Come and meet the wonders of our watershed and join other educators to share best practices. We will also present a travelling trunk that contains everything you need\, including a wave tank that allows students to become restoration and ecosystem scientists working on living shorelines and erosion prevention.  These trunks will be available to sign out from us and also several other locations throughout the state of Florida for the 2026/2027 school year.\nThis workshop will take place in multiple locations with major meeting points including the following: FSU Coastal Marine Lab and the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve.  Free overnight accommodations are available at the FSU Coastal Marine Lab dorms with full kitchen access.
