SUMMARY:Living Shorelines
DESCRIPTION:Coastal erosion is a natural process. Wind\, currents\, and wave action constantly reshape shorelines. While seawalls might seem like a permanent solution\, they often increase erosion on neighboring properties and can fail during intense storms. Living shorelines use plants and natural materials to stabilize shorelines\, support the surrounding intertidal environment\, and create habitats for both aquatic and terrestrial species. Understanding these coastal-friendly landscaping practices can help\nstabilize your property and stem erosion.

SUMMARY:Flight of the Monarch Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve on Tuesday\, November 18\, from 1:00-5:30 pm for a free educational event about monarch butterflies. Each fall monarch butterflies pass through our area during their 2\,ooo mile long migration to their overwintering grounds in Central Mexico. Over the past 25 years\, Reserve staff along with volunteers have routinely captured\, tagged and released monarchs as part of Monarch Watch’s Citizen Science program to understand the dynamics of the migration through a mark and recapture program. We invite you to join us to learn and celebrate this beautiful creature. \nActivities will include:\nMonarch Migration presentation followed by Tagging\ndemonstration and release of tagged monarchs.\n4 Sessions begin at 1:15\, 2:15\, 3:15 & 4:15 (limit of 60/session) \n“Flight of the Butterflies” Movie (56 mins)\n3 Showings begin at 1:30\, 3:00 & 4:30 (limit of 30/showing) \nDisplays on the monarch life cycle\, planting native\nmilkweed and microscopic detection of OE parasite. \nHelp plant native milkweed. \nChildren’s activities include: button making\, “Pin the Tag\nthe Monarch” game\, butterfly face painting and create a\nmonarch ink block print to take home\, tattoos. \n*Note: Nature Center gift shop will remain open until 5:30pm.*

SUMMARY:Quantifying River Flow Metrics for the Apalachicola River
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Steve Leitman will provide an overview of a new project looking to develop and quantify scientifically defensible river flow metrics that can be used as evaluation criteria to test potential modifications to federal reservoir operations in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) River system. This project aims to improve ecological resilience in the Apalachicola River floodplain and estuary while minimizing impacts to upstream stakeholders. Dr. Leitman has studied and worked on projects in the Apalachicola system for over 40 years. To register please go to https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/7386225996313976413. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information on how to join the webinar.

Register by Dec. 12\, 2025 to reserve a seat in this course.\n*This training is not a substitute for Division of Historical Resource’s Archeological Resource Management training. \nThe training will be broken up in two portions: classroom instruction in the morning and an off-site historical and archeology tour in the afternoon. The lunch break is scheduled between 12:30 p.m. to 1:20 p.m. EDT.\nAdditional tour information and location will be provided following updated weather forecasts. While participation in the afternoon session is not required\, it is a valuable opportunity to observe land management strategies in relation to this resources. Wear comfortable\, closed-toe shoes. Hat\, insect repellent\, water and sunscreen are recommended.\nDEP EMPLOYEES: The course will be listed on PeopleFirst training LMS system after its completion.\nClass ID#: 18868\nCourse Title: The Collection of Historical/Cultural Resources on State Lands and Resource Impacts

SUMMARY:Productivity at the Bottom of Apalachicola Bay
DESCRIPTION:Harry Mumma\, the Reserve’s Davidson fellow and Notre Dame PhD candidate is studying ecosystem metabolism over Eastbay using several different instruments that measure CO2\, O2\, and other water quality parameters at different areas within the water column. By collecting data monthly and at different habitats over two years\, the study will look at how metabolism varies with season\, under different freshwater flow regimes to the bay\, and in different habitat types. Harry will share some of the data he has analyzed\, and his sampling will continue into 2026. To register go to: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/8157151872667961436 After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

SUMMARY:Understanding Red Tide: Effects on Coastal Communities and Strategies for Mitigation
DESCRIPTION:Red tide events pose significant environmental\, economic\, and public health challenges for Florida’s coastal communities. Join us for a discussion on red tide\, its impacts\, and current strategies to reduce its effects on coastal waters. \nOur featured speaker\, Kevin Claridge\, Associate Vice President for Sponsored Research and Coastal Policy Programs at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium\, will present on January 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve. \nKevin serves as the Mote Administrator for the newly established Florida Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative\, recently approved by the Florida Legislature and Governor. His responsibilities also include oversight of Mote’s Office of Research Grants\, Contracts\, and Sponsored Programs\, as well as the Mote Marine Policy Institute. Prior to joining Mote\, Kevin served as Director of the Office of Resilience and Coastal Protection at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). \nThe Florida Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative is a partnership between Mote Marine Laboratory and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The initiative establishes an independent\, coordinated effort among public and private research entities to develop prevention\, control\, and mitigation technologies aimed at reducing the impacts of red tide on the environment\, economy\, and quality of life in Florida. \nIf you miss the talk on Friday\, Kevin Claridge will also be presenting at the Friends of St Joseph Bay Preserves annual meeting at the Centennial Building in Port St. Joe at 10:00 am Saturday\, January 17th.

SUMMARY:Lessons Learned and Pearls of Wisdom from the Bay: Oyster Restoration in Apalachicola
DESCRIPTION:Emily Fuqua will kick off the Sci-Cafe series this year with oyster restoration projects she has been involved in around the Apalachicola Bay area. By integrating oyster biology and restorative aquaculture approaches into restoration\, these projects aim to support Florida’s oyster populations and their ecosystems\, and they incorporate a large array of techniques from larval culture to drone mapping. Emily will highlight promising additional and alternative approaches to traditional oyster restoration for Florida and the Apalachicola Bay area. \nEmily recently earned her PhD at Florida State University in December 2025. Her background includes finfish and shellfish restoration using traditional and restorative aquaculture techniques for fisheries management and ecosystem restoration. She has worked with culturally and economically important species\, such as cobia\, redfish\, and oysters in South Carolina and Florida. Her research focuses on conservation and restoration of important coastal species and ecosystems. To register go to https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/4207101376533861470 After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Understanding these coastal-friendly landscaping practices can help stabilize your property and stem erosion.
