SUMMARY:Oyster Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the role oysters play in the health of Apalachicola Bay. Discover what makes the bay so ideal for growing oysters\, what gives our oysters their distinct flavor\, and how oyster bars benefit the ecosystem. We will also look at what possibly made the oysters collapse and what is being done to restore them to Apalachicola Bay. After spending some time in the classroom\, participants will get the chance look at its these creatures under a microscope. This class is full of opportunities to learn more about the animals that live in our bay and along the tidal flats. SUMMARY:Sci-Cafe: Apalachicola Geological History
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola River is Florida’s largest river by volume. It is the only river in the state with headwaters that extend into the southern Appalachian Mountains. Join us as State Geologist and Director of the Florida Geological Survey Harley “Guy” Means tells us about the Apalachicola River’s long geologic history that began during the Miocene Epoch (23 – 5.3 mya). Some of the river’s geologic history is revealed in the spectacular bluffs that have been exposed by the erosive power of the flowing water. Florida’s tallest natural exposure\, Alum Bluff\, is one of many places along the Apalachicola River where multiple geologic units are exposed. We will discuss the geologic history of the river and focus on some of the classic exposures that occur between Chattahoochee and Apalachicola. \nto register click here:\nhttps://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/3575780471259616605

SUMMARY:Sci-Cafe: What Everyone Should Know About Fungi
DESCRIPTION:Mushrooms are perhaps the most well-known members of fungi\, but they are just the “tip of the iceberg” when it comes to world of microbial activity beyond our sight in the soil below. What are fungi and what distinguishes them from the plants and animals we readily recognize? What exactly is a mushroom? What role does it play in the life history of its species? Dr. Tom Dolan will present a bit of background on the Kingdom Fungi before focusing on mushrooms\, including their structure\, function\, and diversity of forms. He will also cover mushroom identification techniques while presenting photos of common Florida mushrooms.\nHe is now retired Emeritus Professor of Biological Sciences from Butler University of 32 years.\nRegister here https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/6033036125366142816
