SUMMARY:Sci-Cafe Investigating Hydrologic Alteration as a Driver of Shifting Forest Species Composition in the  Apalachicola River Floodplain
DESCRIPTION:River floodplains and the vegetation within provide critical services such as water filtration and nutrient balancing\, flood mitigation\, habitat\, raw materials\, food\, and recreation. Globally\, many rivers have experienced alterations to their natural flows which affects vegetation species distributions throughout floodplains and the services they provide. Our speaker\, John Tracy\, has spent the last four years investigating how trees around the Apalachicola River have responded to changes in flood patterns and how their regenerative strategies explain observed changes in forest types which have ecological implications within the floodplain and downstream in the bay. John is a member of the multi-disciplined team organized by the Apalachicola Riverkeeper to restore floodplain connectivity around the Apalachicola River. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Steven Morey is the Distinguished Research Scientist for the NOAA Center for Coastal and Marine Ecosystems and a Professor in the Florida A&M University School of the Environment will discuss his research using models to discover hydrodynamic and ecological responses to climate variability in Apalachicola Bay and beyond. Dr. Morey earned his Ph.D. in oceanography from Florida State University and\, prior to joining the faculty at FAMU\, was a Senior Research Scientist at the FSU Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies. He is a physical oceanographer with expertise in hydrodynamic modeling\, coastal processes\, and impacts of circulation and environmental variability on marine ecosystems. Dr. Morey’s current research includes modeling of Apalachicola Bay hydrodynamic and ecological response to freshwater flow variability\, assessing and improving models for Gulf of Mexico circulation\, and applications of satellite wind measurements to coastal oceanography. SUMMARY:Update Oyster Restoration in Apalachicola Bay with Devin Resko\, FWC and Dr. Sandra Brooke
DESCRIPTION:Apalachicola Bay’s oyster industry thrived for over a century but experienced a significant collapse in 2012. Despite various restoration efforts\, oyster populations have not yet recovered. Florida State University is examining the causes of the collapse\, identifying obstacles to recovery\, and exploring strategies to restore -a healthy Bay ecosystem and a sustainable oyster fishery. Dr. Sandra Brooke will provide an update on the progress of this initiative and share key findings from their research. Devin Resko from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) will discuss FWC’s efforts to restore the oyster reefs in the Bay benefiting both the oyster populations and the Bay.
