SUMMARY:Social Science Basics for Coastal Managers
DESCRIPTION:The social sciences are a valuable but often overlooked element of coastal zone management. Issues from marsh restoration to flood mitigation all involve critical human elements— knowledge\, values\, and attitudes—of the people that live\, work\, and play in areas we manage. Dr. Chris Ellis and Brenna Sweetman with NOAA’s Office of Coastal Management will lead participants to an exploration and understanding of established social science methods to help increase your capacity to deal with the human dimensions of an environmental issue. This training provides the basic knowledge and skills to help coastal managers understand their stakeholders. Register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/social-science-basics-for-coastal-managers-tickets-126858819143\n\nDay 1 Understanding Stakeholders 9:30am-12:00pm est \nThis live\, online module introduces the novice participant to prominent social science disciplines\, important social science questions\, and ways in which social science can be used to meaningfully and systematically engage stakeholders. \nYou will learn how to \n• Recall the major social science disciplines and their applicability to coastal zone management\n• Identify and incorporate behavioral considerations from the social sciences in defining a problem\n• Conduct a stakeholder analysis\n• Evaluate the strengths and limitations of different stakeholder engagement techniques \nDuration: 2.5 hours \n\nDay 2 Writing Effective Survey Questions 9:30-11:30am est \nSurveys are a popular information collection tool to help coastal managers understand their stakeholders and quickly assess large populations. Unfortunately\, because of their popularity\, many people untrained in survey creation administer poorly designed surveys that yield questionable results. This live\, online module serves to provide coastal managers with best practices to write more effective survey questions. \nYou will learn how to \n• Review and critique surveys\, and identify common mistakes in question design\n• Incorporate 25 best practices when creating survey questions\n• Create appropriate question layout and design\n• Identify ways to improve survey questions that yield desired data types \nDuration: 2.0 hours \nContinuing education credits are available depending on the number of modules attended\, this course offers one to five hours of continuing education credit for Certified Floodplain Manager professional certifications.

SUMMARY:Apalachicola NERR Hosts Virtual Estuaries Week for 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola NERR welcomes Franklin County to attend Virtual National Estuaries Day this September! As a measure of public safety\, National Estuaries Day at the Reserve – which usually draws 800 people – has moved online this year. The mission of National Estuaries Day is to connect people with the estuarine community that supports the life of thousands of species\, including us\, the humans that live off the bay. Annually in the past\, that mission was accomplished by inviting students\, families and experts alike to gather in one place for one day to share knowledge about the bay and enthusiasm for its conservation. This year\, we are taking the opportunity to expand the scope from just one day at the Apalachicola NERR Nature Center to a whole week around the entire Apalachicola Bay watershed. \nWHAT:   Virtual Estuaries Week Online Celebration and Remote BioBlitz\nWHEN:   Virtual Estuaries Week Activities – Sept. 19-26\, 2020\nLive BioBlitz at St. George Island State Park – Saturday\, Sept. 26\, 2020\, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nJoin us virtually for our celebration of the Estuary beginning on Sept. 19 right here at www.apalachicolareserve.com. There will be video tours\, virtual field experiences\, downloadable/printable activity sheets\, and a weeklong digital BioBlitz that you can participate in by downloading the ‘iNaturalist’ app or ‘Seek by iNaturalist’ and uploading any species you find around the whole Reserve! \nFor details about the apps: \n\nSeek by iNaturalist: https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/seek_app\niNaturalist: https://www.inaturalist.org\n\nTo check up on the status of the BioBlitz\, check out: \n\nhttps://www.inaturalist.org/projects/apalachicola-nerr-virtual-estuaries-day-bioblitz\n\nThere will be one day of in-person activities on Saturday\, Sept. 26. Registration on Eventbrite will be required in advance (Direct link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/apalachicola-nerr-estuaries-day-in-person-bioblitz-tickets-119625295479\, or go to https://apalachicolareserve.eventbrite.com and look for the “In-Person BioBlitz” event). The event will take place at St. George Island State Park from 9 a.m to 3 p.m.\, but your group’s participation in all activities will only take about two hours. Groups of no more than 10 people will visit three stations. Proper precautions following CDC guidelines will be in place\, including a hand-washing and hand sanitizer station\, social distancing\, and mask enforcement for staff and participants. There will be 15 minutes between groups to clean and sanitize any equipment as necessary. During visits to each of the stations\, participants will be able to receive coaching in using the Seek app and be provided with opportunities to find and identify species in three distinct habitats on St. George Island. The event is free\, but participants will need to pay admission fees at the State Park entrance.

SUMMARY:Sci-Cafe: Art + Science | The Hidden World of Apalachicola Bay
DESCRIPTION:(Presented at JOBA Gallery at High Cotton – 230 Water St. Apalachicola\, FL) \nConsuming vast amounts of carbon dioxide\, diatoms are masters at photosynthesis\, taking energy from the sun and transforming it into the air we breathe. Their beautiful and diverse patterns and shapes form sturdy glass-like houses that are so responsive to the dynamics of the world that surrounds them they are used to help monitor and maintain the health of Florida’s waters. \n“Mysteriously beautiful\, I have learned that diatoms are so much more; they are vital to our health\, the waters surrounding us and the world beyond\,” said Beth Appleton. “This exploration has led me to the creative bridge between art and science.” \nThis exhibition showcases Appleton’s discoveries expressed as microphotography\, cut paper works\, videos and digital assemblages\, as well as a talk from Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve’s Megan Lamb on the importance of these fascinating organisms. \nRegistration is not required but seating is limited.

SUMMARY:Living Shorelines for Residents
DESCRIPTION:Coastal erosion is a natural process caused by currents\, wave action\, wind\, storms and even boat wakes. The traditional methods used to harden the shoreline like seawalls and rip rap can actually often increase the rate of coastal erosion as well as remove the ability of the shoreline to carry out natural processes. \nThe Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) will host a workshop on using Living Shorelines to combat erosion on Thursday\, Feruary 20\, 2020\, 2:00-4:00 pm for local residents and homeowners. The workshop will discuss living shorelines vs. hardened shorelines as well as how to evaluate a shoreline by considering the physical factors such as wave energy\, prevailing wind and wave direction\, vegetation\, and soil type\, in addition to presenting living shoreline methods\, materials\, permitting\, and success stories of local living shorelines. We will also look at which types of plants are the most beneficial and visit a local living shoreline. \nThe lecture is free but please register beforehand on our Eventbrite page. For more information\, please contact Anita Grove at 850-670-7708 or Anita.Grove@dep.state.fl.us\, or Josh Eaton at (850) 670-7710 or joshua.eaton@floridadep.gov.

SUMMARY:Sci-Cafe: Living Shorelines in Action
DESCRIPTION:(Presented at Eastpoint Beer Company – 374 US 98 Eastpoint\, FL) \nLiving shorelines represent a sea change in the way that people are looking to best protect their waterfront property from the destructive forces of erosion. Instead of using “hard” armored surfaces of concrete or rip-rap this more natural method is taking over. This method uses the same principles as wetland marsh by using seagrass roots to anchor soils and to provide a habitat for living creatures. Come find out about this relatively low cost alternative to concrete that is taking over! \nNo registration required but seating is limited. Show up early to enjoy the fantastic views.
