Participants in this workshop will learn about resources to help them transform their inefficient yard into a luscious bay conscious landscape. The class will also feature information on innovative Green Infrastructure techniques such as rain gardens\, green roofs\, and bio-swales. Come find out how to be good to the bay and reduce the time you spend on maintenance! Please register for the class in advance at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bay-friendly-landscaping-tickets-205712169637. SUMMARY:Apalachicola River and Floodplain
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola River has been called “the Lifeblood of the Bay.” Freshwater from the river mixes with salty gulf creating Apalachicola Bay\, one of the most pristine and productive estuaries in the country. The river has always played an important role in Apalachicola’s history and it is vital to our lives today. It is also a significant resource for the state of Florida\, and its freshwater flow is critical to the health and productivity of the Gulf of Mexico.\n\n \nParticipants will learn about the ecology\, culture\, and history of the Apalachicola River and floodplain\, as well as come to appreciate the impact interstate relationships play in the control of the river. After the in-class portion\, participants will embark on a journey up the river aboard the ANERR research vessel Henry Lee to get an up-close look at some of the floodplain ecosystems and distributaries of the river.\n\n \nTickets for the class are free but must be claimed in advance by visiting our eventbrite page (https://riverclass2021.eventbrite.com).\n\n \n\nIf you have any further questions\, please do not hesitate to get in touch with either Anita Grove at (850) 670-7708 or by email at anita.grove@dep.state.fl.us – or with Josh Eaton at (850) 670-7701 or email him at joshua.eaton@floridadep.gov

SUMMARY:Sci-Café: Status Update on 2017 Oyster Reef Restoration
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola Aquatic Preserve Manager will discuss the results of the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council (GCERC) Apalachicola Bay Oyster Reef Restoration Project. Approximately 95\,500 cubic yards of a lime rock aggregate were placed on an estimated 317 acres of debilitated oyster reefs in the Apalachicola Bay during October 2017. The Aquatic Preserve staff has been monitoring the progress of these restoration efforts and will present their monitoring data. The methods and data from this project have been extremely useful in planning future restoration efforts in Apalachicola Bay\, specifically site selection and appropriate cultch material. SUMMARY:Sci-Cafe: Burning Butterfly Questions - The Elfin in the Room with Robert Meyer
DESCRIPTION:Robert Meyer\, a biologist with Tall Timbers will join us to discuss his ongoing research into the relationship between fire and the frosted elfin butterfly. \nThe frosted elfin butterfly (Callophrys iris) is in decline across its range. Luckily\, we have the best known population in our own backyard (the Apalachicola National Forest). This presentation will cover some of the novel efforts taken to understand the ecology of the frosted elfin. It will also look into how fire affects that ecology in sandhill ecosystems. \nTo register for this webinar\, please follow this link: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/6055726734375975180
